[wh] Cars - November 2008

Written By: Andrew

This is the first installment of “[wh] Cars”, a random assortment of 3-5 cars each month which I would have in my personal collection (if I had the money/space for such a collection).

This months edition features some hot scandinavian wagon power, a hum drum domestic, and one of my favorite rice rockets.

Check out this months lineup after the jump.

Ford Freestyle1. Ford Freestyle/Taurus X
Yeah, it might be a little homely looking, and it’s not exactly fast, but there’s no denying the extreme functionality behind this wagon “crossover”. The Freestyle looks a little like something out of Subaru’s lineup, but a bit more bloated, to tell you the truth, I think the only reason I even have this car listed here is because of this sick fascination I have with wagons. On a closing note I will say this, Ford is stupid for changing the name to the “Taurus X”. With the name change the idea of this being a fun, fresh, outdoorsy vehicle are gone, and introduces the idea that it’s a boring-ass Taurus…

Volvo V70R2. Volvo V70R (the “P2″ models)
Oh look, another wagon! Yes, as stated before I have some sort of disease which makes wagons appear as a deity of the automotive world in my eyes. But come on, how can you hate 300HP of grocery getting, Honda killing, AWD power? You can’t, so shut it. What more is there to say about this thing? It’s safe, it looks badass (shutup), it’s fast as crap, and they are getting cheaper and more plentiful by the day on the used market. Volvo also has a rabid following and a handful of fantastic aftermarket companies (iPd..). Though they can be maintenance intensive, they are well worth the effort, provided you do your own wrenching, otherwise be prepared to open the wallet and thensome.

Chrysler Conquest3. Chrysler Conquest/Mitsubishi Starion
One of my favorite, and one of the most overlooked of the mid-80’s/early-90’s turbo cars. This little burner could be had with up to 197HP and has a pretty decent aftermarket for making it even… er… “burnier”. If you want a little sleeper that will scoot, get good MPG’s, and be relatively cheap to maintain then look no further. If nothing else the Conquest/Starion looks like it belongs in a Star Trek movie, well… a low budget Star Trek knockoff anyway.
